📡 What is an eSIM?
An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a SIM chip permanently built into your device that is programmed digitally. Instead of inserting a physical card, you scan a QR code and the mobile profile is loaded onto the device. Most modern smartphones, smartwatches and tablets support eSIM.
In Switzerland, eSIM has become standard since 2019. Today nearly all carriers offer eSIM, but activation methods, fees and multi-device support differ significantly.

💰 eSIM fees: free, cheap, expensive
The biggest difference between carriers is the activation fee. Three groups:
Free activation (14 carriers)
These carriers activate eSIM at no extra cost: Swisscom, Sunrise, Digital Republic, Wingo, TalkTalk, Galaxus Mobile, Coop Mobile, Lycamobile, spusu, Migros Mobile and GoMo (current free promo).
Symbolic fee (CHF 5)
swype charges a one-time activation fee of CHF 5. Switching from physical SIM to eSIM is free.
Standard activation fee (CHF 39 to CHF 40)
Aldi Mobile charges CHF 39, SAK Digital and Quickline CHF 40 each. At yallo and Lebara, the CHF 40 only applies when switching from physical SIM to eSIM, new customers get the eSIM for free.
Highest fee (CHF 59)
Salt charges CHF 59 in the Salt store for eSIM activation. This fee is waived only with contract renewal or when buying a new eSIM-capable smartphone directly from Salt.
⌛ Apple Watch and multi-eSIM in Switzerland
If you want to use an Apple Watch Cellular or multiple devices in parallel, check the multi-eSIM service carefully. Carriers differ significantly:

Most current smartphones and smartwatches are eSIM-capable. Minimum requirements per manufacturer:

🔌 Activate eSIM step by step
Activation typically takes 3 to 10 minutes. The flow is similar across all carriers:
Get the QR code or activation code
Depending on the carrier, you'll receive the QR code by email (Galaxus, Wingo), by post (GoMo, Lidl Connect), in the customer portal (Digital Republic, Sunrise, Swisscom) or directly in the carrier app (yallo, swype).
On iPhone: Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM
Tap Settings, Cellular, Add eSIM. Choose Use QR Code and scan the code with the camera. Alternatively, you can enter the eSIM data manually (SM-DP+ address and activation code).
On Android: Settings, Connections, SIM Manager
On Samsung: Settings, Connections, SIM Manager, Add eSIM. On Google Pixel: Settings, Network & Internet, SIMs, Add SIM. Scan the QR code or enter the code manually.
Name the profile (optional)
You can give the eSIM a name like "Personal" or "Business". This becomes useful with Dual-SIM setup so you can pick the right line for calls or data.
Done: you're online
The eSIM is active immediately. With most carriers it takes 1 to 2 minutes for the network to appear. If not, toggle airplane mode on/off or restart.
✈️ Travel eSIM: Swiss plan vs. international providers
When travelling you have two options: use your Swiss plan with EU roaming, or activate a local travel eSIM in addition. Dual-SIM makes this easy.
Option 1: Swiss plan with EU roaming
Carriers like GoMo Europe (CHF 19.95), Sunrise Connect Europe+ (CHF 34.90) or Digital Republic Flat Plus (CHF 25) include unlimited data in EU/UK. With these you don't need an extra travel eSIM for Europe.
Option 2: international travel eSIM (Holafly, Airalo, Yesim, Saily)
For destinations outside Europe or short trips, international eSIM providers are often cheaper than roaming packages:
